The Next Generation of Cooling Refrigerants. An air conditioner or heat pump counts on its refrigerant to cool and dehumidify the air before it’s sent back through your home. This liquid is contained within the coils of your cooling system, but one of the most typical refrigerants used for many, many years – the R-22 (Freon) is now being replaced because of environmental concerns. In fact, this phase-out was mandated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency through the Clean Air Act. By 2020, R-22 will no longer be in production. Introducing R-410A Recognized by the EPA, R-410A is a chlorine-free and ozone-friendly refrigerant. R-410A will keep your home cool without harming the environment. Even better news, Lennox’s most efficient systems are made to use this AC refrigerant, which can help your system function efficiently. The same Lennox systems are known for reliability, quiet operation and improved dehumidification, so you can stay comfortable. Additional Considerations At Alan Heating Air Conditioning, Inc. in Elmhurst, our cooling models can work with R-410A. If you have a system that was made prior to 2010, you may want to consider replacing your cooling system now, before R-22 is completely phased out. Some manufacturers carry alternate refrigerants such as R-407C, R-438A and R-422, however, they may not work with an R-22 AC or heat pump and could compromise your system’s performance.
