Using Your Fan and Air Conditioner in Elmhurst

The weather is finally getting warmer and soon you might have to switch over to your air conditioner. Along with scheduling your annual air conditioner service with the experts at Alan Heating Air Conditioning, Inc., there are a number of other items you can do to remain cozy and save money this month.

During the transformation season in Elmhurst, those far too few spring temps, you probably use ceiling fans to keep cozy. Did you know that operating your ceiling fan along with your air conditioner might not only keep you more comfy during the warmer days, but also save you money? In order to do that you have to make sure you’re taking advantage of ceiling fans and your air conditioning as you should be. Here’s a few things to note:

Raise Your Thermostat

This is where the cost savings can potentially come in. If you aren’t raising your thermostat you won’t be saving any money. Raising your thermostat by a few degrees, in addition to using your ceiling fan, shouldn’t affect your comfort level too much. For every degree you raise your temperature, you’re decreasing the length of the “on” cycle of your air conditioner.

Adjust Air Direction

Ceiling fans have a clockwise and counterclockwise setting to adjust dependent on the season. During the warmer months you’ll want to make sure the air is blowing down. You can stand below the fan to see if you feel a breeze. If you don’t, switch the direction. Ceiling fans do not actually decrease the air temperature, but they make you feel cooler. It’s the wind chill effect. You’ll feel cooler than the temperature shown on the thermostat.

Turn Off Fan When You’re Not There

Treat your ceiling fan like you would lights, turn it off when leaving a room. If no one is in the room to feel the wind chill that a fan provides you’re wasting energy by running your fan. Remember, a fan doesn’t actually cool your air, it just moves your air.
